Visit Of The Bishop Of Salisbury - 18th October 2020

Bishop Nicholas VisitOn 18th October 2020, our Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Nicholas, came to take the normal Communion service at St Mary’s Church, East Knoyle. He had asked to come to a normal service, that we did not make it a special Benefice Service - he just wanted to meet with those who attended the church month by month. It was truly a lovely service. The wardens and sidesmen had made special efforts with extra candles and in the dim October gloom, the candles gave a truly welcoming light and warmth. Our small choir (correct numbers and socially distanced of course) sang beautifully and the organ rang out with joy at being in use again after so many months. It was a gentle, comfortable act of worship by the people and led by a caring and compassionate Bishop, who also preached a very moving sermon on the work of St Luke, the physician Apostle, whose Saint’s day it just happened to be.

As we could not offer refreshments because of COVID-19 restrictions, we missed our normal time for fellowship after the Service, but the Bishop was aware of this and stood talking to each and everyone at the church door, giving his time and spreading warmth of heart and spirit to all.

Thank You Bishop Nicholas.

2019 Advent Group And Advent Praise - East Knoyle

Several of us met at Ruth Greggs for an interesting Advent study based on the theme of welcoming the stranger, and we finished our Advent preparation by all joining in at our annual Advent Praise service at St. Mary’s Church, East Knoyle. This service has a very different format with drama, music items and poetry in addition to some lovely carols and Advent prayers. Everyone worked so hard to make it a worthy offering for our Sunday evening worship, and I really cannot single anyone out. However, I cannot resist a special ‘Thank You’ to Jennie Hynd for all the work she put into the drama which always replaces the sermon at this service.

East Knoyle Fete - 7th September 2019

Fete Bunting

This year's East Knoyle Fete took place on Knoyle House Ground on Saturday 7th September 2019 which was a week later than last year and maybe was a contributory factor to being less well attended. The gate was down by fifty percent but surprisingly the result was only less a quarter of the figure achieved last year. The day was fine but not gloriously hot like last year but with the later date meant that a traditional Fete clientele may well have been stealing a late summer break in the early school term. The venue is a slight dilemma in that dogs are not allowed and the British love to have their pooch with them; plans are afoot as to how we may combat this another year.

Having said all this the main thing that we, the organisers, had wanted to achieve was a meeting of Church and village and in the comments received to date this was thought to have been abundantly demonstrated. The quality of the stalls was superb and was an example of the effort and endeavour the stallholders had made. It would be wrong to pick out any particular one as all were beautifully dressed and ordered. The children's games and sports were thoroughly enjoyed and the highlight for most was the tightly Fought Tug of War won eventually by Milton. A delicious BBQ was served next to flowing pints being served of Murray's ale so what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

(Editor's note: It was great! A very BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved)

Illustrated Talk - “Beyond the Studio” - East Knoyle - 20th October 2018

john maine sOn Saturday 20th October 2018 at 7.00 pm, John Maine RA will give an illustrated talk in the East Knoyle Village Hall about the recent development of his work. Although he does exhibit smaller scale sculpture both indoors and out, the principle body of his work is site specific, based in landscape and with architecture. John has worked in many different parts of the world and will show examples from near and far, including his recent installation at Hereford Cathedral, and the Memorial Stone for Stephen Hawking in Westminster Abbey.

We are fortunate that John, who is a very distinguished Royal Academician and a long time member of our Village, will give us an insight into the origins of his work and the process of realising it.

There will be an opportunity for questions at the end, and before the talk there will be wine and canapés, with coffee and brownies to follow afterwards.

Tickets cost £15.00 and are available from Wren’s Shop, East Knoyle, or Briony (tel: 01747 830350) and Lavinia (tel: 01747 830262).

All proceeds will go towards St Mary ’s Church Funds.

St Mary's Church, East Knoyle - Auction Of Promises - November/December 2021

auction sHaving been delayed for eighteen months and we will not mention why, the Auction of Promises is soon to take place. Expenses for the church have gone on undiminished and now more than ever we are seeking fundraising ideas just to maintain the fabric and the environs. People's generosity remains an anchor for our support and particularly now with the church having been shut during the heat of the pandemic we are hoping to make up for the loss of regular income and indeed social events, such as the fete which we could not hold.

Please support the auction with bids for lots which we know you will enjoy. It is a very eclectic mix for all ages and will start at noon on Monday 22nd November and finish on Monday 13th December at 10.00 pm. The auction will be hosted by the on-line platform called Jumblebee and if you are not familiar with the way it works here is an explanation:

  • On the address bar of your browser type in:
  • Once you have gone onto the website, from the link above, save the address in your browser so you can go back to it easily.
  • To bid you have to register - don't forget your password so you can login again.
  • The site uses Proxy bidding. This means you can enter your maximum bid but the price will only go up incrementally from the opening price and won't jump straight to your maximum bid. It only increases as others bid. This also means that if you bid on a Lot that someone has already left a higher bid on the system will show you have been out-bid straightaway. Just keep bidding until you win!

The final highest bids at 10.00 pm on Monday 13th December will be the winning bids and Jumblebee will collect your payment.

Lots include: work from local artists, London breaks, afternoon teas, farm visits, bee-keeping tour, hosted dinners, and much more. All pockets catered for!
