Illustrated Talk on ‘Stonehenge’ - Saturday 16th April 2016

We were fortunate indeed to be able to welcome Julian Richards to St Andrew’s. He is one of the country’s leading experts on Stonehenge and one of the country’s foremost archaeologists, broadcasters and authors. He gave us a fascinating account of how Stonehenge might have been built, for what purpose it might have been created and over what period it might have been constructed. An audience of seventy found that the evening flew by, such was the fascinating story he told. A sum of just under £1,000 was raised for Appeal funds.

The Village Produce Stall

The Stall opened at the beginning of March 2016, although somewhat hampered by the cold and wet weather. Do have a regular look at what’s on offer. If you have plants, cuttings, seeds, fruit, flowers or vegetables to contribute, Chris York will be delighted to receive them.

Update On Appeal Funds Raised To The End Of April 2016

We ended 2015 with the sum of £215,000 in the Appeal coffers. By the end of the first quarter of 2016, that sum had risen to £233,000; a tremendous start to the year.

April 2016 has been a fantastic month. In addition to donations from villagers and the proceeds of the April Talk, we received grants from two Trusts and Foundations totalling £27,500.

So, we have now raised a total of £262,000. The PCC’s thanks to everyone who has supported the Appeal in so many ways.

The Development Project - An Update On Progress

At its April meeting the PCC reviewed the tender process and the costs submitted by four local building contractors. The PCC then unanimously approved the detailed designs, specifications and costings for the Development Project and agreed to make an application to the DAC which will ultimately lead to the granting of a Faculty. The application was submitted in early May.

Once we have been granted a Faculty, it is at this point that the PCC will meet again specifically to consider the final costs and the funding of the Project.

The Christmas Card Competition

This is a repeat of last year’s very successful competition, which revealed a lot of artistic talent. The sale of the two Christmas cards containing designs by the children made a good sum for the Development Appeal. Christmas 2016 seems a very long way away but, in order to have the Christmas cards available to sell at the Church Fete on August Bank Holiday Monday, we have to start early.

On Sunday 12th June, at the Family Service, the competition will be launched. Entry is open to all children who attend church or who live in Donhead St Andrew and Barkers Hill. The closing date for entries will be in mid-July, followed by the judging. The results will be announced at the Family Service on Sunday 14th August. Then the designs will go for printing in time for the Church Fete.

The Patronal Festival Weekend

Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, we celebrate St Andrew’s Patronal Festival. On Sunday 28th August 2016 there will be a Festal Family Eucharist at 10.30 am in St Andrew’s Church with choir and organ, followed by juice, coffee and cake. On Monday 29th August, there is our annual Church Fete on Stoney Hills Field on Sans Lane from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
