Prayer of the Month

At this terrible time of the war in Ukraine, this is a Prayer for peace in our troubled world by Frances Paget

Almighty God, from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed;
kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all men, the true love of peace;
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom,
all those who have power in the nations of the earth;
that in peace and tranquillity your kingdom may grow,
till the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of your love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Month

Our prayer for this month is a great favourite and a reminder that we need God’s guidance and help.

Heavenly Father,
We remember with gratitude,
The light of the star which drew them on;
those wise men, travelling with their gifts
for a fellow wise man, and a king.

We believe that light draws us on;
Draws us to Jesus, Light of the World,
Draws us to give ourselves.

And the Light that is Jesus,
also gives us light;
it shows us the way,
it shines before us to encourage us.
This is light; true light; the Light of the world;
the light that is a way of peace, hope, justice and forgiveness;
The Light that is Love in a darkened world;
and the way to God, Father of us all.
Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - April 2022

We continue to pray as usual so please do keep your requests and news coming. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), or Theresa (tel: 01747 829188).

In this time of such worrying uncertainty and especially the violence we see daily in the media reports on Ukraine, many of us feel the need of reassuring security. We need to be reassured that there is goodness, that there is security in something or someone today. I have chosen two of my favourite prayers this month; they are not new and I have use them before, but I trust that at least one of them will help someone to pray, to find comfort.

A Prayer from the Iona Community

Christ our life, you are alive,

In the beauty of the earth, in the rhythm of the seasons,
In the mystery of time and space, Alleluia

Christ our life, you are alive,

in the tenderness of touch, in the heartbeat of intimacy,
in the insights of solitude. Alleluia

Christ our life, you are alive,

In the creative possibility of the dullest conversation.
In the dreariest talk, the most threatening event. Alleluia

Christ our life, you are alive

to offer re-creation to every unhealed hurt,
to every deadened place, to every damaged heart. Alleluia

You set before us a great choice, Therefore we choose life.
Amen

We all have friends. This Prayer is about our relationship with them and with God.

We have friends. Thank you for them Lord.
But some of them forget us as we forget them, but You never do.
Sometimes we are unkind to each other, but You never are unkind.
Some of our friendships are fickle, best friends one day, but almost enemies the next.
Our relationship with You is not like that, it is with someone who is always the same, always there,
always reliable, constant and unchanging.
Thank You Lord that You are my friend, true, unfailing, always just there.
Amen.

Prayer of the Month

Sometimes we need to have a little time just to ourselves, sometimes we can use that time to think about God and our own lives. Lent is a sort of testing time and this prayer was written by a Chinese Christian when he was in prison because of his faith.

I asked the Lord for a bunch of fresh flowers,
but instead he gave me an ugly cactus with many thorns.
I asked the Lord for some beautiful butterflies,
but instead he gave me many ugly and dreadful worms.
I was threatened,
I was disappointed,
I mourned.
But after many days,
suddenly,
I saw the cactus bloom with many beautiful flowers,
and those worms became beautiful butterflies,
flying in the spring wind.
God's way is the best way.
Amen

Prayer Of The Month

Sometimes we need to have a little time just to ourselves; sometimes we can use that time to think about God and our own lives.

Loving God,
Here I sit and wait,
Thinking about life
And this wonderful world around us.
I sit in quiet hope that you will come
To water the barren fields of my life.
To make my life blossom
With flowers and fruit like the earth you created.
Be with me day by day I ask,
Help me to live
A life which is a Blessing to others.
Amen

This year's All Souls' Service will be held at St Mary's Church, East Knoyle, on Sunday 31st October 2021 at 4.00 pm. This is a quiet service with music silence, prayer and poetry to remember our friends and loved ones who have gone before us, and pray for those left behind. The service will be followed by refreshments and a time to share memories.

There is a sheet in each church on which you can write down the names of those you especially wish to remember and have read out during the service. Alternatively, you can send the details to the Benefice Office by email - click here, and when the new page opens, select the 'Contact Form' to send your message.

Please do join us for this special service.

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - October 2021

Many prayers have been made and many prayers have been answered so keep those requests coming. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), or Theresa (tel: 01747 829188).

Prayer Of The Month

This Prayer is by Canon Frank Topping and is for forgiveness. I am sure we shall all resonate with this! I certainly did.

LordI
Why is it so difficult,
To make peace with each other?
No wonder there are wars.
Is it pride that holds my mouth tight shut,
A childish feeling
that I am not the one who should apologise?

It wasn't my fault?
In these flare ups
What does it matter whose fault it is?

The only thing that matters is love and harmony.
Lord, turning my back in anger is weakness,
It reduces me as a human being.
Give me the courage,
the stature,
to say I am sorry.  Amen

It is also very much Harvest time here in our villages, and this lovely Hymn/Prayer by Marie Williams is one I have used before, but it is too good not to repeat it this year.

For Harvest Moon,
And leaves of Gold,
For Autumn beauty.
I give You thanks.
For gentle rains
For sunny days
For misty mornings
For fields of Hay.
I give You thanks.
For Dreams fulfilled
For peace and hope
Abundant grace
You've bestowed.
I give You thanks.
For answered prayer
And tears You've wiped
For restful sleep
All through the night.
I give You thanks.

For seeds to sow
And open doors
For all of these
And so much more.
I give You thanks.  Amen

Ride+Stride - 11th September 2021

Are you looking to raise money for maintenance/repairs to your church?

Why not join Ride + Stride on Saturday 11th September 2021?

Taking part in Ride + Stride is an excellent way to combine raising a bit of money for church repairs and maintenance with spending an enjoyable day out exploring the local area on foot, bike or horseback, and visiting some of Wiltshire’s rich heritage of churches and chapels.

Wiltshire Ride + Stride (or its predecessor the Great Cycle Ride) has been going since 1984 and has raised over £1.5 million for the county’s churches. Half of all money raised goes to your own church, and the other half is used by the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust to award grants to churches with special maintenance needs.

You don’t have to be young and super-fit: just strolling between one church and another can constitute participation in Ride + Stride, and most sponsors are generous enough to reward even the shortest of journeys. For the more competitive, however, there are cash prizes for the best achievers, including several for under 16-year-olds, and parishes which mobilise large numbers of participants can compete for the Brooke Cup (plus £500) and Junior Group Cup for the under-18s (plus £100).

Anyone can join in on 11th September 2021. Plan a route that suits your energy levels or get ideas from http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/things-to-do/activities/cycling . The chances are very high that you will enjoy the day!

Information and sponsorship forms are available from Wiltshire Historic Church Trust - https://www.wiltshirehistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ride-stride/

Wiltshire's Ride+Stride is supported by the National Churches Trust.

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - September 2021

We continue to pray as usual so please do keep your requests and news coming. Contact any of us: Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), or Theresa (tel: 01747 829188).

In view of the terrible situation in Afghanistan and the difficulties around the world caused by climate change, we have so much to be thankful for at this Harvest Season. This month's prayer reminds us to remember those who are suffering deprivation.

This month's Prayer of the Month is by Lilian Cox:

We dare not ask you bless our harvest feast
Till it is spread for poorest and for least.
We dare not bring our harvest gifts to you
Unless our hungry brothers share them too.

Not only at this time Lord' every day
Those whom you love are dying while we pray.
Teach us to do with less and so to share
From our abundance, more than we can spare.

Now with this harvest plenty round us piled,
Show us the Christ in every starving child.
Speak, as you spoke of old in Galilee,
"You feed, or you refuse, not them but me!"
Amen.
