Speaker: Mr. John Reading

Mulled cider and victuals afterwards

All are most welcome

Come, all you jolly ploughmen, of courage stout and bold
That labour all the winter in stormy winds, and cold;
To clothe the fields with plenty, your farm-yards to renew,
To crown with contentment, behold the painful plough!

Prayer of the Month

The Wise Men came to see Jesus and to worship him and we celebrate their coming in January, this little prayer refers to the gifts they brought, Think about those gifts as you pray this prayer.

God of Gold, we seek your glory,
the richness that transforms our darkness into colour,
and brightens our dullness with vibrant light;
your wonder and joy at the heart of all life.

God of incense we offer you our prayer,
our spoken and unspeakable longings, our questioning of truth,
our search for your mysteries, deep within.

God of myrrh we cry out to you in our suffering;
the pain of all our rejection and bereavements,
our baffled despair at undeserved suffering,
our rage at continuing injustice;
and we embrace you God with us,
in our wealth, in our yearning, in our anger and our loss.

Amen.

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - December 2019

Please keep the requests coming to The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort.

Prayer Of The Month

I think I have used this little Prayer almost every Christmas but it really does sum up just how Christmas can help us every day so here it is again.

May the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds,
the perseverance of the wise men,
the obedience of Joseph and Mary,
and the peace of the Christ child
be yours this Christmas.

Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - November 2019

Please keep the requests coming to The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort that comes from knowing someone is praying for us.

Sometimes there is nothing actually wrong but perhaps we need to have a little time just to ourselves. If you manage to grab a few moments like that, why not use that time to think about God and how He can affect your own life.

Loving God,
Here I sit and wait,
Thinking about life
And this wonderful world around us.
I sit in quiet hope that you will come
To water the barren fields of my life.
To make my life blossom
With flowers and fruit like the earth you created.
Be with me day by day I ask,
Help me to live
A life which is a Blessing to others.

Amen

All Souls Service, East Knoyle - 27th October 2019

all souls s

This year's All Souls' Service will be held at St Mary's Church, East Knoyle, on Sunday 27th October 2019 at 4.00 pm. This is a quiet service with music and candles to remember our friends and loved ones who have gone before us, and pray for those left behind. The service will be followed by refreshments and a time to share memories.

There is a sheet in each church on which you can write down the names of those you especially wish to remember and have read out during the service. Alternatively, you can send the details to the Benefice Office by email - click here, and when the new page opens, select the 'Contact Form' to send your message.

Please do join us for this special service.

Baby Loss Awareness - Wave of Light Service, Semley - 15th October 2019

baby loss awareness weekBaby Loss Awareness Week takes place from 9th to 15th October every year.

It’s an opportunity for parents, their families and friends to acknowledge and remember their precious babies who have died.

It is led by SANDs in collaboration with over 60 charities in the UK.

Baby Loss Awareness Week is an opportunity:

  • For bereaved parents and families across the world to commemorate their babies’ lives
  • To break the silence around pregnancy or baby loss in the UK
  • To ensure all bereaved parents in the UK get the best possible care, wherever they live, when they need it

Baby Loss Awareness Week culminates with the global ‘Wave of Light* on 15th October, which is also recognised as International Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day

In 2011, our son, Jerome, was born still.

Richard and I would like to invite you to join us and other families across the world by lighting a candle at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 15th October and leaving it burning for at least one hour to remember all babies that have died too soon.

Last year a small group joined us in Semley Church just before 7.00 pm to light candles and we will be doing this again this year.

Wherever you do this, you will be joining a global ‘Wave of Light’ in memory of all the babies who lit up our lives for such a short time.

Each candle lit in memory of a precious and much wanted baby will be supporting SANDs’ vision of a world where fewer babies die and helping to ensure that every bereaved family, wherever they live in the UK, gets the care and support they need, when they need it, for as long as they need it.

If you’re unable to join us but would like a candle to be lit in someone’s memory - please let me know.

Anna Warhurst

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - October 2019

Do keep asking for prayers and do please let the Minister know at the beginning of a Service if you wish them to pray for someone in the Intercessions. We tend to be careful about saying names unless someone has asked.

Prayer requests and Thanksgivings please give to The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), or The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174). Perhaps you have a special "Thank-You to God " in the Bounty of this wonderful Harvest Season. It is good to remind ourselves of good things.

This month's Prayer of the Month is by Lilian Cox

We dare not ask you bless our harvest feast
Till it is spread for poorest and for least.
We dare not bring our harvest gifts to you
Unless our hungry brothers share them too.

Not only at this time Lord, every day
Those whom you love are dying while we pray.
Teach us to do with less and so to share
From our abundance, more than we can spare.

Now with this harvest plenty round us piled,
Show us the Christ in every starving child.
Speak, as you spoke of old in Galilee,
"You feed, or you refuse, not them but me!”

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - September 2019

This month, there have been some wonderful answers to our prayers so do not be discouraged. Keep sending in your requests to Julia (tel: 01747 829166), The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), or The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174).

Prayer of the Month

I have used this prayer before but it is such a relevant one that I hope you will all pray it again with me.

This Prayer about our journey through life is by Canon Frank Topping.

Lord, you spent your earthly days travelling on foot.
Your greatest journey was on a donkey.
But you left behind a trail of hope, and love and peace.
At least I know that it is not the distance travelled that matters, but the quality of the journey.
In all my travels,
Christ be before me,
Christ be behind me,
Christ be beside me,
Christ be at mine end and at my departing.

Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - August 2019

Many of you have requested prayer these last months but we are always ready to listen and pray for you. Do keep asking - contact Julia (tel: 01747 829166), The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), or The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174).

Looking back I realised that it is four years since Richard and Anna came to us. The following is the Prayer I used as Prayer of the Month then as we anticipated their arrival. It is still very appropriate and can never be prayed enough.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God,
teach us to walk in your way more trustfully,
to accept Your truth more faithfully,
and to share Your life more lovingly.
By the power of the Holy Spirit
guide us in our work for Your Church,
so that we may become as one family,
wanting only to serve You and our community.
Amen

Lammas at Moors Farm, East Knoyle - 14th July 2019

Courtesy of June & John Reading

On a beautiful warm summer Sunday morning, the large barn at Moors Farm was the venue for the annual Lammas service, suitably bedecked with large bales of hay all around and some smaller bales arranged centrally for seating. Quite a large congregation heartily joined in the hymn singing accompanied by Roger Brown on the keyboard. The Rev’d Richard, Jo and the visiting ordinand from Cuddesdon, George Meyrick, led the service and distributed the bread and wine, and Jo delivered a thoughtful sermon.

Many thanks to June and John Reading for allowing us to use the barn and for making all the necessary arrangements, including refreshments. Our thanks must also go to those who supplied delicious nibbles to accompany the welcome coffee, tea and cold drinks. Another very pleasant Lammas Day!
