Speaker: Mr. John Reading

Mulled cider and victuals afterwards

All are most welcome

Come, all you jolly ploughmen, of courage stout and bold
That labour all the winter in stormy winds, and cold;
To clothe the fields with plenty, your farm-yards to renew,
To crown with contentment, behold the painful plough!

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - January 2020

Please do continue to make your requests for prayer known to us. Prayer changes things. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort that comes from knowing someone is praying for us.

Prayer of the Month

The Wise Men came to see Jesus and to worship him and we celebrate their coming in January, this little prayer refers to the gifts they brought, Think about those gifts as you pray this prayer.

God of Gold, we seek your glory,
the richness that transforms our darkness into colour,
and brightens our dullness with vibrant light;
your wonder and joy at the heart of all life.

God of incense we offer you our prayer,
our spoken and unspeakable longings, our questioning of truth,
our search for your mysteries, deep within.

God of myrrh we cry out to you in our suffering;
the pain of all our rejection and bereavements,
our baffled despair at undeserved suffering,
our rage at continuing injustice;
and we embrace you God with us,
in our wealth, in our yearning, in our anger and our loss.

Amen.

Ride + Stride - Saturday 12th September 2020

Are you looking to raise money for maintenance/repairs to your church?

Why not join Ride + Stride on Saturday 12th September 2020?

Taking part in Ride + Stride is an excellent way to combine raising a bit of money for church repairs and maintenance with spending an enjoyable day out exploring the local area on foot, bike or horseback, and visiting some of Wiltshire’s rich heritage of churches and chapels.

Wiltshire Ride + Stride (or its predecessor the Great Cycle Ride) has been going since 1984 and has raised over £1.5 million for the county’s churches. Half of all money raised goes to your own church, and the other half is used by the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust to award grants to churches with special maintenance needs.

You don’t have to be young and super-fit: just strolling between one church and another can constitute participation in Ride + Stride, and most sponsors are generous enough to reward even the shortest of journeys. For the more competitive, however, there are cash prizes for the best achievers, including several for under 16-year-olds, and parishes which mobilise large numbers of participants can compete for the Brooke Cup (plus £500) and Junior Group Cup for the under-18s (plus £100).

Anyone can join in on 12th September 2020. Plan a route that suits your energy levels or get ideas from http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/things-to-do/activities/cycling . The chances are very high that you will enjoy the day!

Information and sponsorship forms are available from Wiltshire Historic Church Trust - https://www.wiltshirehistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ride-stride/

Wiltshire's Ride+Stride is supported by the National Churches Trust.

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - February 2020

Please do continue to make your requests for prayer known to us. Prayer changes things. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort that comes from knowing someone is praying for us.

Prayer of the Month

This little Prayer of St. Theresa of Avila is well known but it really does carry on from my little message in ‘Ashmede Patterings’ in the February 2020 edition of ‘Parish News’ and we can never repeat good prayers too often.

Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you.
All things pass, God does not change,
Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
No hands but yours, no feet but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world.
Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good.
Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people. Amen

There is also a little poem, author unknown, based on this prayer and this may be even more familiar.

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which He looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which
He walks to do good,
Yours are the hands with which
He blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are His body.

Christ has no body now but yours.
No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes with which He looks
Compassion on this world,
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - March/April 2020

We continue to pray as usual so please do keep your requests and news coming. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort that comes from knowing someone is praying for us.

Prayer of the Month

Just now the world is even more turbulent than ever, and so this prayer by John Johansen-Berg is a Prayer for Peace. It involves lighting a candle and setting aside a little time to think. Sometimes we need to do this to create some peace in our own lives. If there is more than one of you when you do this, just change all the pronouns and make it 'we' instead of ‘I’. It will be even more effective.

I light this candle for peace, Lord.
May its light scatter the darkness
may its flame be a symbol of hope;
may its burning be a sign of faith
joining many other lights for peace.
I light this candle for peace.
May my life be an expression of peacemaking;
may I seek to be a light in a dark world,
pointing to you, Jesus, the Prince of Peace,
and following the way of peace.
Let the candle burn as a sign for peace,
Offered to you. Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - December 2019

Please keep the requests coming to The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188), The Rev’d Richard (tel: 01747 830174) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551). There are many of us in need of that extra help and comfort.

Prayer Of The Month

I think I have used this little Prayer almost every Christmas but it really does sum up just how Christmas can help us every day so here it is again.

May the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds,
the perseverance of the wise men,
the obedience of Joseph and Mary,
and the peace of the Christ child
be yours this Christmas.

Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - July 2020

We continue to pray as usual so please do keep your requests, news and thanks coming.

Prayers of the Month

These two prayers are quite different but I do hope that one of them at least may help you this month.

Father, thank you for the thrill of finding something new.
Thank you for the joy of discovering something we didn’t know before.
Thank you for the discoveries we make,
about life,
about love,
about ourselves.
Thank you for other peoples new ideas,
and all the inventions which add to the joy of our lives. Amen.

Roy Chapman & Donald Hilton.

A Prayer of Bishop Richard Harries:

Lord,
You are the deepest wisdom,
the deepest truth,
the deepest love,
within me.
Lead me in your way. Amen

Prayer Cycle and Prayer of the Month - September 2020

With this very strange time of “Lockdown” there have been several requests for prayer this last month, but God’s heart is big enough for a lot more. Please do let us know if you would like us to pray for you. Contact any of us: The Rev’d June (tel: 01747 828427), Julia (tel: 01747 829166), Theresa (tel: 01747 829188) or the Rev’d Kevin (tel: 01747 828551).

Prayer Of The Month

The following Prayer is by Canon Frank Topping and is very appropriate at this Harvest Season:

Lord, your harvest is the harvest of love;
love sown in the hearts of people;
love that spreads out
like the branches  of a great tree
covering all who seek its shelter;
love that inspires and recreates;
love that is planted in the weak and the weary,
the sick and the dying.
The harvest of your love is the life that reaches
through the weeds of sin and death
to the sunlight of resurrection.
Lord, nurture my days with your love,
water my soul with the dew of forgiveness,
that the harvest of my life might be your joy.
Amen

Lay Pastoral Assistants & Lay Worship Leaders Meetings

*** The meeting mentioned below scheduled for Monday 10th February 2020 has been cancelled - it will be re-scheduled as soon as possible ***

Lay Pastoral Assistants (LPA): Hopefully you have had a chance to consider if you are being called to this ministry over the past few weeks. A number of people have expressed an interest in knowing more so we are going to hold two opportunities to meet and explore what this ministry means and is all about. We are therefore holding two meetings. One on Thursday 30th January at 7.00pm at St Mary's Church, East Knoyle. The other possibility is Monday 10th February at 10:30am at St John's Church, Charlton. We look forward to seeing you at one of those meetings. Please also come along if you are interested in becoming a Lay Worship Leader (LWL) as we will also have information for that ministry at these meetings as well.
